Emotion

An affective state of consciousness in which (in this case) joy is experienced

Tetley's Tea is available in Angola.

Speaking of tea, has anyone else noticed that drinking Coca-Cola doesn't actually slake thirst, it increases it?  I never noticed before, probably because I never drank coke unless it was added to cane spirit.  Now that I am out riding the bike every day I do get a bit parched and when I get home, I can't be arsed to wait for the kettle to boil so I can make tea, so I have a coke instead.  But I still feel thirsty so end up making a cup of tea anyway.  Now that could be because I was really thirsty so today when I got back, I decided to see if I would still feel thirsty after just a cup of tea.  I didn't.  Then much later this eveningm when I definitely wasn't thirsty, I decided to try a coke and I was suddenly thirsty again so had to make a cup of tea.  I am aware that tobacco companies laced their cigarettes with extra nicotine to make them more addictive so what conclusion can I draw from my research?  Well, tea is clearly better than Coca Cola so in order to speed the process of making it, I should invest in an electric kettle.

Alex's tutor is back.  She had to make an unexpected trip home leaving me to carry on with Alex by myself.  His number recognition is very good.  He gets that from his mother.  She can distinguish a higher denomination bank note from an inferior at 200 paces.  So I thought I would concentrate on enlarging the boy's vocabulary, especially idioms, which enrich our language and confuse natives.  I was particularly pleased today then, when his tutor asked me after the boy had finished his lessons whether I had been instructing him in her absence (she is native of South Africa).  Apparently she had confessed to being curious about what he had been doing while she was away, to which he had replied, 'Curiosity killed the cat.'

I know you shouldn't let children play with knives but Alex is half African so there are some traditional skills I don't mind him learning because they may come in useful,  In this case he is sharpening Pangas, which will be very handy if any of the missionaries the new church is attracting call to convert us.  Then I can illustrate 'cutting someone down to size.'

I needed an edge on the blades so I could chop these up, more fruits of the sea from our local fish counter, the Atlantic Ocean.

  1. If any Southern Baptist missionaries show up, believe me, they need some cutting down to size! That's the main kind produced around here, and I hear about "mission trips" to Africa on a regular basis. Gag. I'd love to hear about you scaring a bunch of them half to death! LOL

  2. I was not much older than Alex when I was hospitalized with a severe case of Meningitis-Encephalitis. Yea yea that explains it all! While recovering I was fed tea, so to this day it tastes like medicine and I can't drink the stuff. Coca-Cola was the only solvent that would remove the big stickers the parking cops would slap on your windshield when they put a boot on your car in Caracas. So that's off bounds as well. Next time little Alex or Rocky sheds a tooth put it in a glass of Coke for a week or two and see what happens to it. No thanks. I'll stick with beer and water. In your case Tom-Dom juice might be best. A boy is never too young to learn machete sharpening skills, a useful ability anywhere you go.

  5. Just in case you're curious, Coke makes you thirsty simply because they add almost as much salt to it as they do sugar. It's also excellent stuff for cleaning toilets. It eats the lime scale right off.

    1. Salt! Perhaps it wasn't all in my imagination then.

    2. I suspect your feeling of thirst was spot on after drinking the Coke. They add the salt so you'll drink more Coke...

  6. As kids my mother decided to show us how bad coca-cola was for our teeth. The baby tooth was put in it and left for a few days. We never did see decay, and were unimpressed.

I thought Alex was going to school near Luanda. I must have missed something.

Alex's smile could light up the whole planet.

  8. The only time I ever drank Coke was in 1971 in Morocco. There was no alcohol anywhere, and no right-minded person would drink their water..... so, it was all down to Coke. My teeth are still suffering.

    1. The first Coke I ever drank was in Berlin on a hot summer's day back in the sixties. I don't recall ever drinking water in Monaco either but there was no shortage of alcohol.

    2. Having been given a second crack at the word by Rachel, I see it is Morocco and not Monaco. Damn these German Chinese spectacles. Mind you, there was a time you wouldn't want to drink the water in Monaco either.

  11. Anything which will remove tarnish from metal products such as coke is clearly not going to be particularly kind to your intestines (I would guess)! Tea for me too (Yorkshire tea is the best).
What are the fish - tuna? I don't know my whole fish very well so apologies if I'm WAY off the mark.

  14. Nice to see the knife being sharpened like that; I sharpen the carving knife on the step outside. As for coke, I was giving P a lecture only a couple of nights ago about the perils of drinking it and I reminded him that I have not drunk coke since 1974 when I was in Romania and, like Cro in Morocco, I did not trust the water. I recall it cleaned my intestines well, as mentioned by Craig above. I have however drunk plenty of far worse things since and continue to do so but chose to over look this in my lecture. P illustrated that he had not taken any notice of me this morning as he loaded a six pack of coke cans into his truck before going off to work.

    1. Morocco? Bollocks, I read Monaco in Cro's comment above. You must have neater handwriting. My crew in Uganda were all Romanians. They used to distil something they said was milk to all Romanians but they had to dilute it with coke to make it drinkable. It made me fall over a lot so I stopped diluting it.

  15. Lordy, I am dying to go fishing. I saw a shirt the other day that said, "I had to call in sick today; I have my arm in a cast."

We haven't given Rubén a knife yet (or Phoebe, for that matter... I shall have to remedy that), but on his fifth birthday, he'll get a bow and arrow. And Phoebe, for her eighth, got a pellet rifle.

  25. Thank you for sharing this comprehensive list. This will be very helpful for anyone looking to hire a reputable and trustworthy property management company. It is important that you feel your properties will be well cared for, that there are solid procedures in place for all scenarios, and that your tenants will feel comfortable with the management company. All of these things, and more, can affect your property’s turnover rate and need to be addressed upfront.
