By the time the aircraft arrived I had long since woken up (I remember briefly waking up and asking where I was and they said we were in Windhoek refuelling and I must have gone to sleep again) but in the remaining hour of flying I scoffed all the crew's sarnies and was beating them at cards. The Ambullance crew were there to meet us with a full crash kit and I said, bollocks, let me sit in the front and see the countryside so they took me on a bit of a round robin before delivering me to Morningside clinic.

After one day in intensive care I had unhooked myself and was reading a book to a dear old lady much sicker than I was.

After four days an exasperated consultant agreed I could go home to Cape Town discharging me with the words, 'You are the fittest bloke I have ever had in Intensive Care'.

I just had to get out though as I was busting for a decent pint and a fag.

Joanne, I had never heard of Korsakoff's syndrome but the doc, when he broke the news to me said he had good news and bad news for me so I told him to give me the bad news first. He said I had Korsakoff's. Blimey I said and asked him for the good news.

'You'll forget', he said.

Apparently if I knock the booze on the head and take vitamin B tablets, I'll be OK. Trouble is I just can't remember where I left the damn tablets...Hippohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09468795398813061897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8512022050229968490.post-64903366242535039772012-02-25T18:20:12.583+01:002012-02-25T18:20:12.583+01:00I've been mostly away for two days and only ha...I've been mostly away for two days and only had a glimpse of this, no time to read until today. I can now confirm that I can neither walk on water or swim in mud. Marcia, seeing me emerge from the bush covered in goo and oblivious to the serious nature of the experiment I had just conducted, thinks I am barking mad.Hippohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09468795398813061897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8512022050229968490.post-81837532318641392552012-02-25T12:01:00.408+01:002012-02-25T12:01:00.408+01:00Thanks for the link, Chris. I took a little too much Dutch courage last night in preparation but fell asleep on the sofa instead. Obviously that hasn't endeared her to me so things are a little frosty this morning. Considering that she bitched about me wanting to spend $250 on a digital video camera (which Fidel the Cuban still has not delivered, the bastard), Christ knows how she will react to the cost of a clinic!

Still, it is only money and as Megan points out, it may be self serving but how can you place a value on even just one little life being saved? Besides, they're all future customers so in twenty years time, I'll get a return on investment.

I'm afraid I rather like being considered an anti social grumpy old bastard, people tend to leave me alone so I cannot afford my reputation to suffer by being seen to do something altruistic.Hippohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09468795398813061897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8512022050229968490.post-51010823264602474722012-02-25T11:24:53.923+01:002012-02-25T11:24:53.923+01:00(Re-posted minus appauling spelling mistakes)
